History

It was 1989 when the Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) was established in Chittagong with the sponsorship of a private charity, the Janasheba Foundation. 

Initially set up as a private medical college under Chittagong University,In 1992, which subsequently turned into a full phased university after the promulgation of the Private University Act.Thus the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) came into being as the first ever private medical college in Chittagong.

The man behind IAHS and USTC is National Professor of Bangladesh and internationally reputed physician Dr. Nurul Islam who is the Founder Vice-Chancellor of the USTC.

Teaching Methods

The MBBS course is a five-year program. The academic plan of MBBS course in USTC is based on UGC and BMDC approved course and curriculum in which lectures are supplemented by tutorials, demonstrations and practical laboratory assignments. Sufficient lecture halls, tutorial forms and laboratory facilities are available for all the departments. 

Hospital Facilities

USTC has its own hospital named Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital. The seven-storied 350-bed Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital has all the facilities, which are essential for a modern general hospital. After being satisfied Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) recognized the Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital to offer Post Graduate training in Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Pathology.
Hospital Facilities of USTC

Again Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council after their inspection has given the permission for opening the MD (Paed.) Course under USTC in Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital. Within a short period Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital proved its acceptability to the community and day-by-day the number of admitted patients as well as outpatients are increasing. USTC authority realized the situation and decided to set upa 500-bed Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital Unit-11.Very soon its construction works will finish.

Laboratory Facilities

Laboratory Facilities of MBBSLaboratory facilities for Basic Sciences viz. Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine exist as per requirement of the BMDC. Facilities are now beingexpanded for out patients and indoor patients.

Course Curriculum

The MBBS course is a five years Programme. The whole curriculum is divided into three different parts to cover in three subsequent professional Examinations. The curriculum of this course is designed according to the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council’s (BMDC) requirments and when or if required all possible modifications have been and will be done from time to time according to their suggestions.
